For men past forty who kept going
Everyone treats burnout as a cognitive problem. Surfit40 treats it as a body problem — and solves it with physical redesign.

The claim
When a muscle is overloaded for long enough it stops being able to relax. It is not weak. It has lost the ability to switch off. That is what survival mode does to the rest of you, and it is why the rest that arrives once a year does not fix it.
The capacity to move across the whole spectrum — speed up and slow down, activate and release — is the first thing to go. You do not notice, because everything still works. Until it doesn't.
Inflexibility isn't strength. It's just fear in a better outfit.
Which is why discipline is the risk factor, not the cure

Most pages like this try to include everybody. This one would rather tell you early if it isn't for you.
Who is writing this
“I lived my life mission, hustled on the side — and I wasn't present when it mattered the most.”
Forty-two. Czech. Sober more than fifteen years — the first rebuild happened at twenty-seven.
Thirteen years in Montessori education, the last few years as deputy head of a school in Prague. Teenagers at first. By the end almost half my week was adults — younger colleagues learning how to hold a role without being swallowed by it. I told all of them the same things. Mistakes are feedback. Perfectionism is a cage. Respect your own rhythm.
Then I worked out I had never once lived it myself fully.
The redesign started quietly in my mid-thirties. I first stood on a board at the beginning of 2021, moved to Portugal in 2022, added Spain at forty. From the outside that looks like freedom. From the inside I was still deputy head in Prague, running projects across three countries, three side hustles on top. I burned out slowly inside my own beautiful machine.
The validation kept arriving. It was never enough. When the things that actually mattered started falling away, I finally recognised the pattern. Not ambition. A cage built from the inside.
Leaving the school at forty-one was the visible step. It was also the last one — most of the work had already happened where nobody could see it. That rebuild is still going, and I am not pretending to be finished. I am further along the same road you are on.
Why the ocean
I teach this through surfing because surfing does all of it at once — cold water, presence you cannot fake, physical range, ego left on the sand, and other people in the water with you. Nothing else stacks those in one place.
Everything dry — the walking, the lifting, the stretching — is preparation for that. I do this so I can do that.
Sleep, movement, rest — and enough attention to notice what you have been outrunning. The layer everyone skips because it is boring and they believe they have already done it.
Every claim carries a grade for how good the evidence behind it actually is. Where it is thin, I say so in the piece rather than in a caption.
Adding three habits to a depleted week is how the cycle repeats. Thirteen years of teaching taught me that sequencing is the whole job.
The waves you can ride for a lifetime are never caught by those who paddle hardest — but by those who finally learn to be still enough to feel what's coming. You do not have to surf for any of this to work. It just happens to be where I learned it.
Fifteen questions about how you live. At the end you get the one area that needs attention before any of the others will hold — and one thing to do about it.
